Offerings of food

A question regarding offerings:-

If one is making a food offering on, for example, a Samhain altar, what is done with the food afterwards?  Is it buried?  Composted?  Eaten?  It seems wasteful to offer food, then bury it - it also seems strange to offer food, and then eat it yourself, or serve it to others.

What is your practice with regards to food offerings?

When I leave food out, it is generally something that can be eaten by the birds and squirrels... breads and fruit.

If it were a meal that I'd left as offering, I don't think I'd have a problem throwing it away the next day. I have read in many books that it is considered the "essence" of the food that is the offering, and after a day or so, the "essence" is considered gone, so its okay to throw it away. That explanation makes sense to me, so it works for me.

I live in a very rural area, so when I leave food out for an offering, I just leave it out. One of Earth's creatures will come along and eat whatever treat I've left.

I put mine out in the yard, and then the spirits get the essence and the animals get the stuff.

Or, the animals get it all. I figure it's ok.

I always prepare the food for whatever the purpose, make use of in ritual, then put it on a plate and leave it out in the garden for all sorts of life to come find it, and eat it. If any is left over the next day, I scatter it in the woods behind our house.

At Samhain I always prepare a meal for lost loved ones in the preceeding year, and sometimes those I have lost before who I wish to honour with remembrance. This applies to both my human and animal friends. If human, I prepare the same three-course meal as my partner and I enjoy, along with drinks. The 'third person' food and drink is later offered up as I describe. If it is a cat or other animal, I prepare the appropriate food stuff and again, do the same after. x
